Portable way to check “No” for BLOB field in MySQL/MariaDB?
In many of my database models I have a field where the user can input a blob.
Sometimes they input a path or file path to a file they want to upload, sometimes they just leave the field blank.
In all cases I want to not allow them to upload anything if they did not do something.
My question is, how can I check if the BLOB field was left blank?
A:
You could try and convert the file into a base64 string, then check to see if the string is empty.
Note that file_get_contents() can return false or an empty string if you don’t have access to read the file, which will be true if the field is blank.
If you must be really precise, you can use the stream_get_contents() function to read the stream and see if you have anything.
