De Ritis (Universita’ di Napoli, Napoli, Italy) A brief but revealing paper about the influence of magnetic fields on cosmic rays, presented as part of the scientific meeting of the CERN-ISOLDE facility. Abstract We present new results from a study of the diffraction of relativistic protons from magnetic fields, in the cases of oblique and parallel propagation. The effects we have observed can be divided into three classes: a depletion of the diffracted flux from the target region (macro-scaling), a reduction of the effective field for proton propagation (micro-scaling), and a drastic change of the diffraction pattern (nano-scaling). The features observed for protons travelling perpendicular to the magnetic field can be interpreted in the framework of a purely geometrical optical model, which makes use of the Rayleigh-Brillouin (RB) scattering. Alternatively, the observation can be explained by an off-axis scattering and/or via a strong modification of the magnetic field. In general, the off-axis scattering produces an azimuthal deflection of the diffracted beam, thus revealing a strong scattering of the magnetic field.Markerless and rapid-prototyped polydimethylsiloxane micropillar bending sensors using a phase-shifting technique. In this paper, a novel microcantilever bending sensor using a markerless and rapid-prototyped polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is proposed. A double-sided direct-writing microfabrication process is applied to fabricate a PDMS micropillar-bending microsensor, and the phase delay of the phase-shifting technique is employed to achieve the markerless formation of a rigid marker at the location of the PDMS pillar on the target surface. The flexibility of the fabricated PDMS micropillar-bending microsensor is verified by a cantilever beam bending test. In order to verify the sensor’s ability to identify a bending direction, the dynamic performance of the fabricated sensor with a markerless and rapid-prototyped method is also tested. The numerical results show that the proposed sensor can be used to detect the bending direction. The results indicate that the proposed markerless and rapid-prototyped sensor can realize the identification of the cantilever-beam 79a2804d6b
