for a 64bits server to work as intended, it is absolutely necessary to have an x64 processor. by forcing a byte-wise setting on x64, we can try to simplify a lot of the porting tasks. there is a disservice in advising people to use such approach: basically, we want to save the effort of digging into the porting pitfalls once the hard work has already been done (setting up a server).

we didn’t change the default value of this setting on x64 because it works and the only problem we encountered was that we would get some errors when running the site, as we didn’t want to change the windows azure web sites to 64bit runtime. so we simply set this to “on” and then restored the default values when the site is deployed, just in case a firewall rules need to be changed (to allow the socket access).

the first dns records we have to set up are the subdomains. and they are set up automatically by the dns administrator according to their demands. you can’t set these records with the xml file but you can set it with a url for each subdomain.

when the site is in launch mode, you can’t run any kind of local scripts. this includes any kind of start-up tools. if you use just the default powershell script (that you’ve got in the web site zip file), you won’t be able to start the site.

one thing to keep in mind is that if you have the default asp.net configuration enabled, you have to set it off in order to use the startup batch file. in general we strongly advise against using this startup script. it is a nice way to handle things, but you need to be very careful.
