the goblin gives spider-man the choice of letting his son die or letting him go. peter knows that he can’t do either of them any harm, but he does not feel like leaving a fatherless kid behind just yet. so, he leaves the goblin and lets the boy get caught on his webbing as well.
there follows a search of the goblin’s home, the capture of the goblin and of the symbiotes, and a final assault on the sewers, in which the spider-men succeed in bringing spidey (and thus us) back to the point in time where they managed to save mary jane. our heroes give spider-man a heartfelt goodbye, and he reflects on his future. may is standing by to wish the spider-men well. this is before the premiere of the goblin’s next horrific threat.
parker ( maguire ) is on a beach in hawaii when he sees her — spidey, in a webbed-up costume, floats by. he can’t believe he’s alive, but tries to summon up the courage to tell mj ( dunst ), only to find her on the other side of the world in paris, with a french-speaking parker.
parker takes mj back to his apartment and apologizes for ignoring her in her time of need. mj meets his dad for the first time, and welcomes peter and mj to live with her and harry. mj and peter will get married. peter decides to go for it. and in the end, he decides to give himself up to the authorities, explaining that they need someone to track down the green goblin. a lack of interest on the green goblin’s part leads to the idea that this will be a story about peter’s new identity as spider-man.
the story plays like the true origin of peter parker, which peter tries to protect mj from knowing. his parents are killed by a man who is obsessed with mary jane. her death leads to peter being paralyzed from the waist down, unable to use his limbs, and he must take care of himself. peter must battle his father’s friend, the green goblin. but when the green goblin is killed, peter never learns how to use his magical powers. hence, he can only use a second-rate web spinneret.
