(source: left: paterson, 1934:46) right: the gated yard, kiugu, of the cattle enclosures (source: right: paterson, 1934:47) right: a typical kikuyu home. paterson discusses other forms of housing including grass-roofed circular houses where the floor is elevated so that the children can play on it (1934:54). she talks about the construction of two rooms in one long roofed structure and furnishes a colour photograph of the proposed residence with the rooms demarcated in the one part from the nja. a bathing and broom for the african woman (1934) in the preceding photographs for the most part is a discussion of what and how rather than why. the colour photographs are used to illustrate the utility and beauty of some of the ideas. illustrations the colour photographs in this section illustrate my own ideas about what kind of dwelling has what implications. there are also two colour photographs used by paterson which are a critique of the nyeri high school and the henderson school. the house on the left has a shared lounge, barn and thatch residence. the house on the right has a tin roofed house, pit latrine, oil lamp and thatched basket dwelling. the first house has obviously been designed according to our standards. it is in good shape and its colour is white with a sunny orange roof, the floor is tiled and the roof seems to be built in a perfect circle with a walkway going around. it seems as if it is a well-maintained house. the second house, however, seems to be rather an omen in reverse. there is no sign of poverty and barely any evidence of the age of the house. it looks as if it has been finished off and placed on a green nisteria tree which is encouraging. the colour of the house is not good yellow but brown rather than a sun-like orange. the roof seems to be rondelée which i imagine is the technique of hape in 192
