the one saving grace of this fairly poor effort is the game play. with one exception, all of the dogfights are quite challenging. i could not figure out how some of the helis manage to get in the way of the pilot, who is pushed around by the wind and the laws of physics. this is supposed to be a dogfight, not a rain dance.
so far there are three missions, two single-player missions and one multiplayer dogfight. the first single-player mission is the most interesting. as a naval aircraft carrier pilot, i jumped in at the deep end with one of the navy’s better combat planes. normally i avoid putting myself into a situation where i’m up against the enemy’s top dog (a jet), but this is hardly the case here. i started out with a boxy, aging b-17 bomber and it quickly became apparent that the enemy f4f wildcats had a considerable advantage in agility, acceleration and maneuverability. i quickly got into the habit of flying the slow, ungainly bomber around the neat-looking f4f’s and they’d get on my tail, so i’d quickly take a few shots at them. i was able to avoid getting hurt by their more maneuverable and nimble guns and quickly grew a healthy respect for their skills. as the mission progressed, i was able to take out several of their f4fs. at the end of the mission, i was awarded a silver cross for successfully destroying six enemy fighters.
the dogfight is the weakest part of the game. it has a number of flaws. first of all, it’s extremely difficult to successfully attack an enemy plane. in most cases, the pilot has to be flying directly into the path of the target or be able to get a good shot at it before it is out of range. even then, the pilot has to make sure that the enemy plane is not able to strafe the plane he is attacking. this makes it impossible to maneuver the plane in a manner that would make it easy to get good shots at the enemy. it’s a near-impossible task. the game provides no sound effects to help you gauge how much the enemy is maneuvering. as a result, it’s really impossible to get good shots at the enemy.
