During production on HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN, Rupert Grint accidentally fell from the film’s set while wearing a stunt harness. He suffered a broken collarbone, and this resulted in a three-week hiatus in filming in Scotland (production was scheduled to resume in January of 2001). Grint’s injury meant that he couldn’t play his usual character, Ron Weasley. He was replaced by a new actor named Dougie Poynter, who appears in every film. Poynter, who was in the Harry Potter series from the beginning, makes a cameo in the film as the Weasley Twins (when the boys are sitting around the fire in Hermione’s dormitory during Harry’s first year).
With HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN, a change that would have much larger consequences was brought to the screen: Albus Dumbledore (Michael Gambon), a character who had been around since HARRY POTTER AND THE PRIVILEGED PRISONER (1997), was first brought to life (or, in his case, third dimension) in-front of the camera in HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS (2002). Characters who had only been mentioned in the books by name now had voices and cameos (Fred and George Weasley, Ron’s parents, Madame Maxime, even the village of Hogsmeade and the abuse of a homing charm), while certain big-name actors were also brought in to reprise their roles as old favourites.
There have been rumors that HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN is not an original idea, but rather a direct adaptation of the Tom Perrotta novel (which would make for a better movie than THE HUNGER GAMES, seeing as THE HUNGER GAMES takes itself too seriously and is thus not all that fun, much like the Harry Potter films). That said, as the novel comes complete with an extra half hour of material not included in the film, it’s likely that the filmmakers may have tinkered with the material or completely ignored Perrotta’s story to try and create a better film. Either way, both the novel and film are very telling of Dumbledore’s relationship with his students. After all, it was Dumbledore who headed up the efforts to free Sirius, which included Harry and the trio of Hermione, Ron and Neville. Dumbledore also was responsible for sending Harry to America to live with Muggles (Fred, George, their wives, and assorted others) and to attend Hogwarts, and, since the Chamber of Secrets incident, took great care to keep his students safe, although Harry doesn’t even realise this fact until late into the second film.
