Wild macaques utilise a wide range of stone tool types, and damage patterns appear to vary across sites, seasons and tool types. To date, only one stone tool type has been documented [ 21 ]; however, some variation was observed across seasons and tools. In addition, the species which we recorded using percussive technology was neither the same at each site, nor were the activities performed in the same order during a single season. In this paper, we describe in detail the behavioural data for wild macaques in Thailand, and the associated artefacts. We also compare our data to that of other non-human primates, particularly chimpanzees, and discuss the implications for hominin evolution.

One motivation for this study was to provide a detailed analysis of tool behaviour in wild macaques. In this paper, we use the term “wild” to describe macaques which have not been the subjects of scientific research and which therefore remain “untamed.” This is the case for all animals which occur in the study sites, regardless of when and where they were documented.

Previous studies have identified differences in behaviour between wild macaques and captive chimpanzees. Wild macaques are known to engage in more visual foraging and shorter-distance activities, compared to both wild and captive chimpanzees [ 19, 23 ]. However, comparison of previously published data is difficult, as research on wild macaques was primarily conducted between 1960 and 1980, and chimpanzees have since been subject to intensive research. A recent study by Tomasello et al. [ 19 ] has shown that wild macaques and chimpanzees both select stone hammers (albeit with differences in size), but that wild macaques use their tools for longer durations than captive chimpanzees. Although the behaviour of wild macaques is more difficult to research because of logistical constraints, such as the length of time required to establish visits, this study showed that although tool-related percussive behaviour was rare in captive chimpanzees, it is considerably more common among wild macaques. Tools used by wild macaques have also been reported to be more variable in size and shape than those of captive chimpanzees, and wild macaques were also observed using multiple tools to process a single nut [ 14, 20 ].
