A rich bachelor has triplets who are all named Kevin McCallister. Kevin hates being a McCallister and that he’s a triplet too. Over the years he creates more trouble than he ever intended. And now he’s moved into an inherited summer home with his new family. The McCallisters soon learn that the house is haunted and that the property is said to be haunted by the ghost of a young boy. The family is warned to stay away.

It’s hard to believe that I’ve reviewed these films, because I’ve seen them so many times over the past 25 years. But when I was little, Home Alone and The Sandlot were favorites. Of course, they never appealed to my kids at all, but I enjoyed watching them as an adult with my own kids.

Why do I hate it so much now? No reason to hate it. It’s just that I’ve seen the film dozens of times and I don’t remember much of it anymore. It was a great, funny, original film when I was a kid. I remember going to see it about a million times.

What an underwhelming sequel. In fact, it’s almost more of a sequel to the first film than a follow-up. The characters are pretty much the same as they were in the first movie but that’s a bad thing. It’s like they weren’t even trying to come up with fresh characters – it’s just everyone doing what they did in the first movie. The acting is lackluster and it’s clear that the screenwriters just don’t care anymore. Al is done down but despite it, he comes across as the best of the bunch.

Any mystery is blown away with the opening scene and the plot is lazily skimmed over in the first half. A third of the way into the film, the ex-con’s revenge is all but complete and the final act is rushed through. The running time is short and the twist and suspense is a let down. The original home movie is supposed to be a highlight of the film but, having seen the first movie, I’d say it pretty much destroys the film’s tension. Both the script and acting have been handed to the director’s daughter, Jade Catta-Preta, who I think is doing a very good job. I hope that means the next film will feature her in a major role.

Kevin McCallister is back. But this time he’s in New York City with enough cash and credit cards to turn the Big Apple into his very own playground. But Kevin won’t be alone for long. I WALK ALONE tells a very familiar kind of revenge storyline about an ex-con coming out of prison after a long stretch and gunning for vengeance against the former partner who betrayed him, the cast alone makes it a superior kind of production. Burt Lancester, impossibly tall and impossibly youthful, is fine as the stressed-out lead and Kirk Douglas more than matches him as the slimy, confident hero. Lizabeth Scott bags one of her usual femme fatale type roles and does well with it, while Wendell Corey is a stand-out as always. The story simmers and bubbles for a while, punctuated by bursts of violence and building to an effectively highly-strung climax.
