the police chief and fire chief may adopt regulations for their respective departments as to hours and places of employment, residence, travel, and other provisions necessary to the service of their department and the welfare and protection of the people of the town. the chief of police shall have the power to appoint or suspend the employment of assistant police officers and all other police officers. the fire chief shall have the power to appoint or suspend the employment of assistant firemen, station attendants, and of such other firemen as he may deem expedient. every firemen shall be expected to be in attendance at the firehouse and available for active duty at all times, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays. no fireman shall be appointed to his position until he shall have demonstrated his good character and ability as a firefighter.

if the translator has made a mistake, too, he has to accept it and forge on; the goal is to produce a translation as accurate as possible, with as little fault as possible. the mistake might be the translator’s fault. it might be the reader’s fault. it might be the book’s fault. (if the translator makes a mistake, read the book again.)

she surely doesnt forget the words from the first book that shes had to pull from the aeneid. youll notice that, on closer reading, a few of the errors (which arent glaring, to put it mildly, though they should have been easily corrected) are consistent with her admission that she didnt read the aeneid the first time. and there are a few i cant determine either way. i would say that this over-confidence in her ability to memorize is a result of her aeneid 1’s method, which i find to be very strict. i imagine shes forced the vocabulary into her head by means of a good number of exercises, especially in chapters 16 and 21. she then must have repeated these exercises over and over in her aeneid 2 classes, thus associating the words with the experience of learning the language. she probably didnt make much of a friend of the standard texts while she was doing this, so i bet that shes drawn to her own reinterpretations of these texts, which is fine. not all standard texts and interpretive commentaries are bad: just read abbagnano and abbagnano and see how they interpret, say, virgilius maro. there are some places in which i really want to believe that she was able to learn the language from these studies, since theyre written for the same audience, the second-year male latin students at one of the all-male universities i know. this would explain the volume of vocabulary on her first pass through the aeneid, which would be too much for her to master from the aeneid alone. the dictionary, of course, is given its own subsection. the dictionary of words is arranged by original and rarely-used words, by words by form, and by basic meanings. abbagnano is pretty good on originality, and, as you noted, offers interesting information on the probable influence of other languages, in particular greek. 5ec8ef588b
