other than the lack of a save feature, this is what dark souls is. its not a difficult game, it simply means you have to do a lot more work than you would if the game was a normal difficulty and there was a save feature, but that isnt a problem because once youre done playing dark souls you will want to play again at a slightly more difficult level, and that is the entire point of the game.

the heavy/armor is only there to prevent you from picking up a piddly little silver sword that costs like a fiftieth of a souls currency, and is usually pretty useless because that’s pretty much all it does. a cheap little weapon and a mount, and thats pretty much it. people usually do it to make the game more difficult. dark souls is a game where the enemies keep a constant, but slight advantage, so you need to learn from the game how to beat that and then continue fighting the game in your own way and doing your best to learn tricks that work, and simply fight the game through those specific sections. i enjoy this because it gives me a chance to explore my own tactics and learn to fight the game using my own methods and it forces me to explore the in-game map and fight on behalf of my own ideas. thats what dark souls is about, not running like a wimp away from a bully.

dark souls is not a difficult game, because it simply takes you longer to get to the point where people would deem it to be a difficult game. it takes the player a long time to gather the resources required to beat the game, and the upgrades and related mechanics they have to make are designed to take a long time, since its a game that runs on frustration, not difficulty. doing this has the effect of ensuring the player is forced to do what they should be doing anyway, which is spend all their time actively exploring the dungeon and haggling with npcs and interacting with the world. the farming aspect of the game ensures that time spent is time with the game, not watching the time pass on your gamepad or mouse.

i’ve been playing dark souls from start to finish on hard, i think, it gave me no hard time, just enough to make me keep going. i’m a huge legend of zelda fan, and i’ve been playing dark souls like that, learning everything i could so i could beat it when i was done with the game. its not a hard game, its just a game that requires you to learn how to beat it. the difference between dark souls and dark souls prepare to die edition is like the difference between alduin and skyrim. skyrim was mostly quite an easy game, with a few ridiculous difficulty spikes, and potions that negated all difficulty but were merely optional. the witcher turned potions into a more integral part of the combat experience. dark souls turned potions into a survival horror mechanic, and made a game with a baseline difficulty that really gets easier the more you play it. dark souls prepare to die edition is a skin and a half different game. i dont even know what to say anymore, it doesnt make any sense. its a basic console port that has very little of what dark souls is about. but for all that, games like dark souls are actually a lot of fun. its paradoxical to refer to them as art, but it seems like people mean it, and they’re right to mean it. while we can talk about art in terms of a shared belief structure, i actually feel like every one of us has at least a bit of artistic experience just because we all share the base instinct to make sense of the world and ourselves. art can be anything, but its such a broad definition that i find it hard to hold onto the idea that art is necessarily ever meant to reflect a specific state of being for anyone but myself. games like dark souls are capable of pushing that state of being even more, and even people who dont have a lot of artistic experience can still find them compelling. the joy that comes from being in a group of people willing to laugh at a mental challenge thats intentionally wearing them down is powerful. 5ec8ef588b
