With Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, director Zack Snyder takes a huge risk with this storytelling experiment and it pays off in spades. By combining stylistic elements from his beloved comic book films, as well as building on the tropes of the comic book medium, Snyder delivers a film that finally brings the awesome visuals and grand scope of comics to the big screen. By going with Superman himself in the title, Snyder is smartly acknowledging the reality that Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy will always be the de facto Superman movie, and this film needs to be able to compete with that. But not only is he able to beat it, he does it in such a way that it’s difficult to even call what he has made a superhero film. Superhero movies are made to be popcorn entertainment, but this might be the movie that finally moves the medium beyond simply providing mindless escapism.

The film takes an emotional and disturbing turn as the filmmakers are able to dig deep into the relationship between Clark Kent and his adopted hometown. An interestingly vulnerable Clark says he wants to explore his roots in order to know who he really is, an element touched on in Nolan’s Batman Begins, but that, for some reason, never came to the forefront of the director’s carefully constructed plot. Superman has accepted Clark as his cousin, even though he was born in Metropolis but raised in Kansas as a farm boy. The two characters have formed a deep connection over the years and it turns out that this means a lot to Kent’s family as well. But it is unfortunately broken in the film as Clark suffers an unexplained, emotional breakdown and has to be whisked away by his adopted father to distance him from the people he loves. It is gut-wrenching, and seems so unnecessary to the story being told.

The Dawn of Justice is an extremely interesting superhero film due to the fact that it’s the first film in what will hopefully be an entire new canon. Justice League is a very complex film in many ways. Firstly, the film is a bit sluggish in the beginning but once the tone change into something more dark and serious, that change worked well. We are introduced to a more serious Batman and Superman, who grapple with their inner turmoil and their own decisions about what it means to be a hero. The dialogue and the way Superman ponders on what being a hero means to him are some of the best parts of the film. Kryptonians have a choice to make which is to have moral autonomy and make their own way in the world or are ruled by the laws. The laws are the ones that are based on the social/religious norms/traditions that govern the society/superheroes. There was a lot of hype for this film, because the people who are about to see it, they don’t know if they want to go and see it or not, because it seems that the trailers don’t show anything that’s in the movie so they don’t know if the movie is good or not. But the picture is way better then what I saw in the trailers. Most of the people who saw the movie reviewed it positively and most of the people who saw the movie said that it’s much better then Man of Steel. I strongly recommend that you go and see it.
