So before I go any further I would like to say that I have read a fair amount of kd romances over the years, and several from the Higashino stable and a couple of Akaishi ones too. They are all good reads and can be mixed and matched. However, I found this book very difficult to get into. The subject matter is a little gruesome (It made me flinch a few times) but I digress. Also I find the writing a little heavy going for me. I am not a fan of long and laborious descriptions, and this books has a fair few. But the emotions the story inspires is what keeps me going to read. So basically theres something about this book that makes it difficult for me to fully engage with. I dont know if I want to know the solution to the mysterious murder or not, and there isnt enough potential for romance. Kaga and Mineko, while fleshed out, dont really have much interaction, and theres no hints of romance to hold my interest.

I love Higashino’s romantic thrillers. They are all unique. Nisei, Kikuya, Akaishi, Douro, Fumiaki and Malice are all very different from one another. Yet each one is a must read. The mystery/thriller element is not really my thing, nor does it feature heavily. I love the forensic aspects of the novels though and thats where the characters come in. I cant help but wonder where Higashino would take his characters if he were to do another installment.

This is an absolute delight to read. Brilliant, fun, insightful, with a great plot and cool non-linear structure. Exactly the kind of book you want on your kindle if you are anything like me, obsessed with the internet and would love to absorb the internet in book form. Kyoichiro Kages sixth and final novel, Malice, picks up from exactly where the last book ended. It picks up the day after the events of the night before and continues the story in a different way.

Translated by Giles Murray The translations of The Devotion of Suspect X and Malice have put Japanese author Keigo Higashino on the map in English-speaking countries, at least among those who enjoy discovering crime books from other cultures around the world. In Malice, reviewed and recommended in 2014, we were introduced to the Tokyo detective Kyoichiro Kaga. That was the second book in Higashinos popular series, but the first to appear in English. Now the seventh book has arrived in translation. Were not sure what happened to books one, three, four, five and six, but well take it because Newcomer is such an intriguing read. Quite daunting eh It has approximate 52 categories I think. Initially I thought I wouldnt follow it as it would make reading a task and not the joy it is. In between the year, I thought maybe it wasnt such a bad idea. It would give me an opportunity to explore genres / authors which I havent read yet. I listed the categories in a spreadsheet dutifully and marked books I already read. Also plotted out books that I would like to read. It would have worked fine except that I discovered the joy of e books. All the books I wanted to read, my favourite books of all time, all available in the mobi or epub format. The advantage of e books for me is they are space saving, can be read at night without lights and can be read during breaks too! But this doesnt mean I have abandoned paper backs / hard covers Higashino continues to outdo himself with the surprising twists and turns of this plot. This is such a layered and clever mystery. The characters are complex and multi-layered, and the mystery is easily solved once the culprit is revealed. I loved the way you can apply the clues to each character and realize who is the culprit at the end. I also liked the format change of some of the chapters from a first person narration to that of a different character. 5ec8ef588b
