to the best of our knowledge, the rsbq is the only published standardized measure of anxiety-related behaviors in rtt. we evaluated the internal consistency of the subscales and the spectrum of scores using the distribution of scores across the rtt cohort and compared them to other construct subscales. although the rsbq has three subscales, the descriptive statistics reveal a clear distinctiveness among the subscales.

the level of acceptance of the rsbq by a representative sample of individuals with id was assessed through test-retest testing. six individuals with id and mood-related symptoms completed the questionnaire on two occasions, one week apart. the internal consistency of the questionnaire (0.89) was similar to that found for the original version (0.83) [ 23 ] but higher than the other scales assessed with the rsbq (0.63 to 0.76).

the srs-a, a standardized measure of social functioning in autism spectrum disorders, has been used in several studies to characterize social adjustment in rtt [ 15 21 ]. the srs-a has three subscales: social awareness, social communication, and social motivation. although there have been few studies of the srs-a in rtt, rojahn and colleagues previously reported evidence of social dysfunction in their 38 subjects with rtt, even though the social subscale scores for age and iq-matched controls were normally distributed, had a narrow range, and had mean scores that were similar to scores in healthy individuals [ 32 ]. in addition, the srs-a has been used to analyze social adjustment in rtt. however, it has not been frequently used by other groups to measure social functioning in rtt because of its cumbersome and time-consuming administration, and small sample size. it has also been reported that the internal consistency of the srs-a is questionable because of moderate to fair item-total correlations, low reliability, and ceiling effects. to the best of our knowledge, no measure has been developed for measuring social adjustment in rtt.




despite the absence of a validated scale for measuring anxiety-like behaviors in rtt, we adapted the adams to assess anxiety symptoms in rtt. in cases of suspected anxiety-related behaviors, the adams was administered immediately after the rsbq. a total score was calculated by summing all items in either the social avoidance or the fear/anxiety subscales, with an overall score ranging from 0 to 33. we chose 0 to 33 as the limit because it is the maximum limit of the scale, although clinicians may choose to administer either the full scale or the fear/anxiety subscale in specific cases. as the final step to examine the construct validity of the rsbq and adams anxiety-related subscales in rtt, convergent and discriminant validity were evaluated. convergent validity refers to the degree to which scores on two related measures (e.g., the rsbq and adams) are correlated, with correlations closer to 0 indicating stronger associations [ 55 ]. discriminant validity is a measure of how well one measure can distinguish between different subgroups of the population [ 56 ]. a strong correlation between a measure and its related constructs, coupled with a low correlation with other measures, indicates convergent and discriminant validity [ 57 ]. the convergent and discriminant validity of the rsbq and adams anxiety-related subscales were evaluated in rtt using pearson correlations with the social adaptability domain of the vineland adaptive behavior scales second edition (vabs-ii) and the abc-c, which were chosen for their correlation with other measures of social skill. 5ec8ef588b
