Take our Hindi movies for instance- right from the classic Sahib, Biwi Aur Ghulam to the poignant The Lunchbox, the Indian film industry has come a long way. No love story was ever the same. Maybe it could be due to the fact that somewhere down the line, in the humdrum of life, people want to go back and discover love. They must have realized that love too can be relaxing and entertaining too. Hollywood is very well-known for their rom- coms since ages. Movies like Breakfast at Tiffanys or When Harry Met Sally (not to be confused with the disastrous When Harry Met Sejal!) were the stuff that made people swoon and fall in love all over again. However, Indian movies were better known for tragic love stories which may not always have happy endings. Movies like Devdas, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Amar Prem, Bobby and Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak- love stories were always intense. Slowly, after the age of revenge sagas and action movies peppered with war movies came an era where love stories became light- hearted and fun. Puppy love was in the air.
There has always been a myth about pre- passionate and passionate love. But the love stories today are too twisted, bizarre and too experimental. They are not as wholesome or innocent as they should be, and more importantly, they are not romantic! There are movies like Devdas, On the other hand, there are so many movies that have tried to be romantic! However, they have all proven unsuccessful when it comes to the overall technical aspects of the movies. They are shot in the wrong color tones, with wrong camera angles, don’t have the right songs, or the acting is very poor in many cases. These all are in no way romantic. They are just alluring love stories, but they aren’t romantic. We also have music companies who take songs that have been played in romantic comedies and add melodramatic tones and change them.
