If you want to know how to successfully use this program youll have to apply the techniques and practice them. Choose any single techniques from one section and focus on it for that day. Youll be fine. Youll find some techniques to apply to all four sections. Some techniques to apply across sections. Some routines to build.
At the time of this writing, Overcoming Retroactive Jealousy has been 2 years in the making. I wrote the first drafts of the book in 2004. That work was good, but it was heavily focused on relationships. Over the years my life changed and my focus changed. In the end, I realized what was missing was a section dealing with the recovery of retroactive jealousy in general. What if someone else read the book who was addicted to the thought (or behavior) of retroactive jealousy? I thought that was important enough to add to the book.
The final step is to develop new coping mechanisms. This is helpful even for people who have been in a successful relationship for decades, because you need a fresh perspective on what it means to be jealous. Did you imagine your partner as someone else? Or maybe your jealousy was based on more fantastical things? If your jealousy is so strong, youre not able to separate yourself from youre partner, even emotionally, it may make you miserable in the long run. Even though hes not with you physically, youre still emotionally connected to him. Your feelings for him are continuing to get stronger. Try to have separate rooms when youre together. However, a significant difference exists. First, in the case of retroactive jealousy, there isnt usually a known, tangible threat. Instead, the threat is purely in your imagination. You and your partner could be together forever. How could it possibly go wrong? Second, there are no compulsions present in any situation involving retroactive jealousy. Unlike traditional OCD, youre not confronted with a thought that you have to prevent, for example, by keeping your hands in your pockets or by shaking continuously. Instead, there is the same level of threat in every situation where its presence can arise. And while theres no compulsions involved in that threat, theres also no magic pill or religious practice that you can do to make the fear go away, either. Note: It is permissible to try picking up the attention of the object of your jealousy with a much less incriminating gaze, such as that shown in the example below. It usually takes some practice to be able to convince yourself that this will not garner the same disapproval that would come with a head turn or direct glance. 5ec8ef588b
