the previous chapter sets up the central conflict between richard sorge and his allies. sorge’s actions were motivated by a mixture of curiosity and a desire for greater german influence in asia. sorge argued that the japanese had not dealt with the russian revolution in a mature manner, and that as a result, the germans should be given the opportunity to establish their influence in that part of the world.
