The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive introduction to the higher vibrational excitation phenomena that are commonly associated with pneumatic hammer tools. In particular the paper deals with the hydrodynamically coupled flow induced vibration of pipelines and piping systems. It is found that many of the existing publications on flow induced vibration phenomena grossly overestimate the vibrational contribution of the induced flow and as a result, they lead to an increase in the safety margin design rather than to a reduction. A new methodology to model unsteady internal flow induced vibration in pipelines is proposed. The authors focused on the hydrodynamic aspects of a flowing fluid including the development of a general parametric constitutive model in a pipe with non-Newtonian properties. The experimental validation of the theory was carried out using either a viscous pipe or a tube with a thin wall. In the last section of the paper, the authors investigated the influence of the non-Newtonian constitutive model on the analysis of the piping induced vibration problem. The findings of this paper have shown that the time-dependent non-Newtonian parameter can be used to find the optimal-frequency and the optimal-amplitude as a function of the time and the material parameters in a pipe. The results show that the curves of the optimal-amplitude as a function of the non-Newtonian parameter are relative close and the curves are not sensitive to the change of non-Newtonian parameter.
