a week before battlestar galactica hit the airwaves, the star wars phenomenon was burning up the box office (1989). battlestar galactica opened on october 4th, 1978 to solid ratings and the second night was down a few points. although battlestar galactica still managed some strong ratings and was a profitable show, it had been mary‘s bloody weekend. ratings for battlestar galactica began to drop in the first half of the season and had only residual ratings. its audience was now over 1 million, but it had the distinction of being the only non-live hit on the air. all eight battlestar galactica episodes in the first season are currently available on dvd. see episode

battlestar galactica casts the story of humanity in the distant future where life on earth has become a desperate struggle to survive in a hostile universe populated by cruel, malicious, and even murderous alien space pirates known as cylons.

battlestar galactica’s second season seems like an afterthought, after having followed the second season series of the 1970s star trek. but then the galactica is just one of several battlestars, and no longer the flagship of the fleet. and there’s a surprise: the best episodes are found in the middle of the season. the first five episodes (seasons) are mostly basic setup, but the following three episodes (in particular, “the cloud” and “the hand of god”) are exceptional. moore finds out what the colonial fleet is all about and acquaints the viewers with the cylons. then a mysterious prisoner/hostage (grace park) is brought aboard the galactica. what is she? and what is she fleeing?

With the Battlestar Galactica telefilm airing in March 1980, season four began in earnest for Battlestar Galactica. The fourth season would bring in a number of more established actors to provide a support cast. Bruce Jenner would begin portraying Major “Dee” Adama (adopted father of Captain Apollo). Jacqueline Bisset would assume the role of an android doctor, Number Six, while fellow 1980 sci-fi film Flash Gordon star Sam J. Jones would appear as a Cylon warrior, Chief Lannon. NBC would soon be getting in on the Battlestar Galactica sweepstakes. In June 1980, NBC ordered a Battlestar Galactica telefilm to air in early 1982. Herb Jefferson, Jr. and Bruce Jenner were cast in the new telefilm as Colonel Tigh and Apollo, respectively. Writers Benjamin J. Balder and Leonard Maizlish would pen the script [ 14 ]. NBC also ordered a second Battlestar Galactica telefilm, now titled simply Galactica. (This was the original Battlestar Galactica pilot that was filmed in 1978.) Battlestar Galactica would not be the only series in the NBC “G-force” sweepstakes. In July 1980, CBS had ordered a second Battlestar Galactica telefilm (written by John Milius) for later that year [ 15 ]. Dennis Cole would play Commander Adama and the telefilm would be titled Battlestar Galactica (based on the 1979 Colonial Games television movie which had aired on NBC the previous year). However, CBS would use the rights to both Colonial Games and Battlestar Galactica for one night only on May 12, 1981. That special would be the “Canon 7” series. 5ec8ef588b
