turkey is said to have the largest collection of islamic manuscripts, books and rare inscriptions. in this collection, mevlevi dervish lodges kept their precious manuscripts and books. the famous sufi dervish order of mevlevi was founded by khan esmail aga in 1391, aga khan was a great collector and supporter of scholastic and scientific activities. he established the mevlevi dervish lodge haci aga khan palace in tokat, which was built in 1597. it is one of the biggest libraries in turkey. it contains more than 30 thousand manuscripts, including many rare manuscripts, inscriptions, illustrated copies of books and works of the great mevlevi leaders (soros, 2007). after baghdad fell, the library was looted and the valuable materials were dispersed. ismail ibn eseri had sent his books to turkey and stored them in his dervish lodge in istanbul in a library. according to him the records written here are incomparable with any of the libraries of the world. libraries suffered severely during the ottoman period. the library at madrassa of the mustansiriya university, which had served as the library of the fatimids, was plundered. the royal library at al-khususiyah, founded by the abbasids, was closed at the same time. palaces, colleges, mosques and gardens were turned into warehouses to accommodate the galleys, fabrics, and other items of the ottoman navy and army. such were the circumstances of baghdad in 1671. in theturkish civil war of 1808, the library of the mustansiriya university suffered extremely. 5ec8ef588b
