not a deep film by any means, but one that is well done. im a stickler for the details, and although i dont find this movie deep, i dont really like it either. it has a bit of a bollywood vibe in its editing, cinematography and song score, but that isnt a bad thing. at the end of the day, the bakshy movie is about good looking people solving a mystery. its a no-brainer, but i like it.
swastika mukherjee is a perfect choice for the role. she can turn her face and body into a paragon of erotic glamour, and, in her second scene, reveal a seductress who is as capable of thrilling the heart as she is of pleasing the eye. she is confident in her performance. after all, she is the daughter of bengali superstar uttam kumar. her love scenes are light hearted, and lack the languor of some heavy-duty, unfulfilled love scenes. this is quite a relief, as the film is otherwise quite heavy-duty. director dibakar banerjee knows his way around a thriller. this is his best film by a long shot. detective byomkesh bakshy! is a big success for both of them.
the film is often very close to its characters, and never lets go. at one point, the two lovers are shown as children, kissing in a boat, with the river as a background. it is a beautiful shot, and it lingers for a while, and lingers in the mind. banerjee has a fondness for the silences. detective byomkesh bakshy! has a very static presence. its about the absence of movement, a constant haunting threat which is omnipresent.
when the pace picks up, you will find yourself concerned about the fate of a couple of characters, who are given a second lease of life. a story of some forty years ago might have been better served by keeping its pace a little slower. the film is flamboyant in its revealing of the plot. so much so that the viewer would find it a little hard to believe that the story is based on a novel by saradindu bandopadhyay, of whose stories we know nothing. the film is more of a remake than a full adaptation. it feels like it could be an older film that we have seen many times before. you have been warned.
the director has completely reinvented the character of ajit, the dr watson to byomkeshs holmes. the story starts when ajits father, a chemical scientist, disappears under mysterious circumstances and he approaches an arrogant byomkesh to solve the case. the case leads byomkesh to a boarding house owned and run by a dr anukul guha, who administers free health care to the poor. ajits father was staying there before he went missing. to get a better grip on the case, byomkesh shifts base to the boarding house, to get himself acquainted better with the missing persons housemates. and as he goes deeper into the puzzle, he slowly realises its far bigger than an everyday case. its a dirty nexus between the japanese army, a chinese gang, the film industry and politicians, orchestrated by one mastermind criminal, and all the action unfolds in the backdrop of opium trade in chinatown, calcutta, 1943. in a contemporary interpretation of war-torn calcutta during the 1940s, the film follows the first adventure of byomkesh (sushant singh rajput), fresh out of college, as he pits himself against an evil genius who is out to destroy the world. this motley band of characters includes another new character, ganga dasi (tripti mitra), the childhood friend of byomkesh, who was also a childhood friend of ajit’s. and so the plot thickens. but the pace is slow, and the picture is too dark, and the film is too confusing. from the beginning, the director, dibakar banerjee, provides the reader with a plot synopsis, but we are not told how it turns out. as a result, the movie is not nearly as engrossing as it could have been. the story as a whole is not very interesting, especially the second half, and so most viewers will not be interested in the how-it-turns-out. the director has not thought through all the aspects of what he is doing, and this is not a criticism of dbb as much as of his scriptwriters. 5ec8ef588b
