He is especially remembered for his career as a dramaturge and theatre critic of the interwar period. Family Semyon Ovseenko was born in Moscow into the family of the literary historian and critic Ivan Ovseenko, for whom he was named. He had two brothers and a sister. Ivanov’s niece Anastasia Ovseenko (later Pantulovich) was a close friend and collaborator with Mikhail Zoshchenko. Ovseenko’s father worked in the newspaper Red Flag. As a child, Ovseenko was studying Russian and French literature at the Moscow Institute of History and Literature. He graduated from the school in 1908, when he joined the football team of the students. Work Ivanov’s daughter, Anastasia, was a close friend of the Zoshchenko, and Ovseenko, as a student, worked in the journal of his friend. In 1919, Ovseenko left Russia for France, where he worked as a propagandist for the publication of L’Humanité. He published his first book on art, poetry and folklore in 1920, and became an actor. During the years 1921 to 1922 he published a column for the journal Kompozitor, and in 1926-1929 he worked as a journalist and chief editor of the journal Proletarskaya Revolutsiya. While working at the journal, he was traveling in Europe. He met with Lenin there. The review was considered a part of the leadership circle. Ovseenko also worked as a screenwriter, but his screenplays were hardly performed. In 1926 he started to work as a theater critic for the Zavtra newspaper. In 1935 he became an editor of the newspaper Leningrad, and in 1937, after the arrest of the poet, Valery Bryusov, he was also arrested. While in prison, he wrote the book of memoirs, Notes of a Life of a Writer, and the book Pervye dnevniki (First Diaries).
