1. I cannot open a PCB with altium.
If I try to open with altium I get the message “altium cannot open the file. it is either not a valid file or an unsupported file type” on the PCB designer panel. I have a small board design in PCB Designer. altium keeps crashing and it looks like a memory error.
I have ver 3.5.4 of the PCB Designer with a fieldbus gui. I am trying to open a file in PCB designer with Solidworks 2013.
What can I do?

Device: Board: Gafisys SMC/FH-10-1.0 and a Desplib
SMCS/FL-10-1.0 is an example of a Solidworks compatible.PCB file. You can open it directly in Solidworks. _________________________________

Things I have checked:
— Altium settings
— The file extension is the same as those files I have in the Altium library.
— I have this file in the library and there is no problem opening it.
— I have checked again the extension of the file and it is the same.
— I have done a clean of the library and restart.
— I have tried to create the.PCB file directly with Altium.
— I have tried to open this file in Designer.

You can try re-installing Solidworks. I’ve had this issue with a few other software applications. These applications do not have a.install file in the installation folder. Re-installing the application will solve the issue. I have tried using the uninstaller located in the Installation folder and have no luck. When I use the command “uninstaller -i” the window closes and then it states “altium file type not recognized” This error is caused by a very old version of Solidworks. It has been a long time since I had this issue as I do not use Solidworks often. If you have a newer version of Solidworks, you could download and install a trial version. You could then move your export file into the trial version’s export folder. Then you can use this version of Solidworks to repair the problem. I don’t have a file which starts with.install. I tried to follow the steps you listed. I tried searching the file and folder with “findstr” for.install, “install”,.installer, and the like but no luck. Also, when I tried running the uninstaller, I got a message that says “The process cannot access the file C:\Documents and Settings\username\Desktop\Solidworks\solidworks.install. Error code: 0x8007002e – C:\Documents and Settings\username\Desktop\Solidworks\solidworks.install”. I have looked at the export file and it does start with.install. When I moved the file into the export folder of the trial version of Solidworks, I am unable to open the.graphic file using the trial version of the software. The error message that pops up is “altium file type not recognized”. I also tried exporting the file to many other programs and then imported it into the trial version of the software. I still get the same message. I have uninstalled Solidworks from my computer and then reinstalled it. Still get the “altium file type not recognized” error. Same thing. Export from an older version of Altium Works and I get that same error about the file type. Export from Altium Works 10 and it imports and exports fine. Export from Altium Works 11 and I get the same error. Export to other programs but cannot import back into Altium Works 11. I think my best option at this point is to export as a ‘g
