History In the early 1980s, engineers were looking for ways to reduce the time and cost of their design processes. At the same time, there was a desire to develop more powerful CAD tools to meet the needs of their ever-increasing workloads. Autodesk’s original team of engineers had developed a process for creating a 3D model using 2D drawings. The 2D model is manipulated to create new 3D models. AutoCAD’s “planner” feature was developed from this process. The first version of AutoCAD was released in December 1982 as a desktop app for use on IBM PC compatible personal computers. It was developed by Dave Dornfeld (later to become Autodesk’s Chief Technical Officer), David van Rossum and Thomas Pegg. The three engineers met at the University of California, Berkeley in the School of Engineering’s Human Interface Lab. They were given an unusual assignment: to design a CAD application that used a planer-style interface to build a model. Dornfeld, who helped create the SketchUp CAD application, created the initial planer interface. The team planned to build a multitasking system using a set of toolbars, from which people could pick what they wanted to do, but would only run one task at a time. This early interface was called Planar (Planar Interface Architecture) and included a “palette” (tool bar) to choose from. The initial planer interface had a layered model, which permitted the use of graphic, stencil or free-form blocks.
