The afternoon had indeed begun badly.
Freelance safecracker Morgan St John had gotten off to a bad start in his hiring aspirations. Sloppy work with keys results in an early arrival of the pizza delivery. It looks like an informal “apology” may suffice.
And dear friends and fellow garden variety guest Roxanne Scott had arrived long enough to make herself sleepy from her hangover. And after changing into jeans, and tucking into the box of pizza she’d brought with her, she was promptly ready to hit the hay.
Of course, this is all a distant memory. But sometimes, before the curtain closes, it’s still nice to keep in mind that things aren’t always about you. Sometimes, things happen.
Dinner was a little awkward, and it’s not as if everyone was there out of curiosity-driven concern about the death of a colleague-of-a-colleague. At least everyone present was attending the funeral, albeit only in spirit. Let’s face it, if they were, there’d be more than a good-hearted head count. There would be some dipping fingers in the hands. Or extending a foot in a toe.
But St John and Scott waited for all to arrive before they ate. It took a good while. And when it came time to order, half a dozen drinks suddenly had to be poured. And it was only after they’d eaten that everyone took their turn waiting for the chafing dish of the night that I reflected how piqued the chefs were going to be.
The pizza was delicious. I’d chosen it specifically for the toppings’ informality. St John was deep into the dinner with pimento cheese on white cheddar, full-fat, and twice baked. He was wolfing it down at a rate that would have impressed a glutton.
Scott had opted for beet and feta, which she chewed thoughtfully while trying to get St John to talk about anything else than pizza.
Long story short, as soon as they’d eaten through the pizza, everyone loaded up on a heaping scoop of something called G-L-O-R-O-U-P-S, roughly the shape of a salad in brine, and hey presto, there was Gino about ready to rock.
