Duchess 76 was a popular two seat touring and training aircraft manufactured by Beechcraft. It was a development of the Beechcraft Model 18, and was first introduced in 1946.As a true training aircraft it was great for learning how to fly and have lots of fun, it was a great all round aircraft. For advanced flight training however, it could not compete with other trainer aircraft and Beechcraft put the Duchess into storage in 1960, because they had not found a market. Only in 1983 was there an attempt to revive the aircraft and produce a new version for the world market. It was first presented in full scale at the Hannover air show in 1984, and was in production till 1989. After that year production ceased, but there was still no real market for a trainer or a light business aircraft. It was sold to fly-over-protected-in-Europe enthusiasts and to be used as a novelty. It was a very complex aircraft which could be difficult to fly, but very fun to fly, and most importantly it was a very stable aircraft.As a trainer model the Duchess was simple, but it had lots of things to do to keep you on your toes, the stall speed for example was 24 mph if you had the landing gear down. As a VTOL aircraft it could not keep up with the speed of an F-14, but it was one of the only aircraft you could fly around in and land on short runways and it was an ideal aircraft for the UK student pilot licence. As a ground school trainer with direct vision, it could be used for take offs from grass runways with ‘low and slow’ approach from 24 knots. Great fun!
