Doom has been played for nearly a decade now, and its influence has spilled well outside of the single-player game. I’ve been a big fan of Witchaven, developer Paul Kirk and Game Crafters for a while now. From my early reports on the title to my review from last year’s E3, Witchaven has become a very integral part of my life. I bought the original game in the Day 1 edition a few months ago, brought it with me to PAX East, and played through quite a bit of it again during this week. As long as I’ve had the game on my shelf, some sort of activity has been taking place here on the blog (score a large badge), though that activity has certainly taken a backseat the past few weeks.
So, how does Witchaven II compare to it’s predecessor? The answer, of course, is overwhelmingly better. Big, big improvements have been made here in every aspect; the scripting and gameplay feel sharper than the first time around, while the new title offers more options, choice, and replayability. As you can imagine, I almost took a hard pass at the latest title simply due to hardware constraints – I hadn’t played it previously – but I’m glad I didn’t.

I’m really glad I passed on Witchaven II in favour of Witchaven HD. There’s just so much more in the new game, which means more for me to write about. I’m also really happy that you guys find my reviews useful; that’s why I do them, really, you’re a huge part of what I do here!
The artwork for Witchaven HD is similarly strong – this series is one of my favourite releases of 2017, so far! – but I’m going to defer that for a bit. For now, you’ll just have to enjoy my review.
