30 days of night is an upcoming american horror film. the film is an action thriller based on the graphic novel of the same name. the film stars james nesbitt, daniel webber, jaime ray newman, kandyse mcclure, jamey sheridan, jeffrey donovan, and chris langham and will be released on may 13, 2017.
the film received mixed reviews from critics and did not do as well as the studio had hoped at the box office. its budget was $24 million, and it grossed only $42.2 million worldwide, and received a mixed score from film critics.
i finally saw this movie the other day at the film’s 10-year-anniversary screening. a few things that stood out:
1. in a world with a lot of comic book movies, this one is a surprisingly different, and refreshing, experience. don’t get me wrong, it’s a horror movie about vampires, but the way it is told is different from every other vampire movie out there. it’s gritty, it’s dark, and it’s really not for the faint of heart. it’s one of those movies that will not for sure go down as a classic, but it will certainly be a cult film, because it’s really well made, with a great cast, and a story that is unlike any other vampire movie out there.
2. the little things that make this movie so good also makes this movie so different. little things like the score, the cinematography, the lighting, and even the small details in the makeup effects. there are a lot of small things that bring this film to the next level. the lighting is fantastic, the cinematography is beautiful, the score is creepy, and the makeup effects are perfect. the movie doesn’t look like a horror film, it looks like a gritty movie with a lot of heart. i have to admit that the makeup effects are a little silly, but i always appreciate an actor who can pull off a silly look. this movie features many of the characters in the film using weapons, they’re just unusual weapons. the makeup effects for the vampires didn’t make them look as scary as they should have, but they were still pretty cool. the film’s three stars don’t have a lot of screen time, but they still have a few good scenes, and they have some great dialogue.
3. willem dafoe has a scene that has to be one of the best of the film. he plays a vampire who is trying to keep a band of children alive. he is doing this by feeding on them, and the children are a part of that, but it’s not like he is doing anything else to them. it’s a very difficult scene, and it is very well done.
4. i should mention that even though this film is rated r, there are a lot of scenes that are a bit gory, but not nearly as much as some other movies i’ve seen that are rated r.
